national arboretum


We visited the National Arboretum in DC a few days after Christmas. All the trees! The bonsai are a crowd pleaser.


Little trees, big details.

Even a little bridge, across a little ravine!

There are also things on a more grand scale.

Winter plants without their green are still lovely.

Tree graffiti, both human and nature-made.

There is art everywhere. Natalie gave us a short lesson on Christmas fern (below), which you can identify based on its stocking shaped leaves. Very seasonally appropriate!

The branches on this tree were so yellow! 

And I liked this papery bark:

We wandered down the path to a gate that brought us to the Anacostia River. Mowgli fell in a few minutes after the picture was taken below. 

It was a good day.
